What’s Next with AI in My ESL Teaching Practice

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Drawing on the 2025 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report: Teaching and Learning Edition, particularly the sections on Artificial Intelligence, this journal reflects on how AI adoption may shape my ESL teaching practice in the near and far future. As an ESL and IELTS instructor working with learners of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels, I view AI not as a replacement for teachers but as a powerful pedagogical support tool.

In the next two years, AI is likely to play a practical and supportive role in my teaching. According to the Horizon Report, generative AI tools can assist instructors with content creation and formative feedback. In my ESL classes, AI can help generate level-appropriate grammar exercises, vocabulary practice, and sample answers for IELTS writing tasks. This is particularly helpful for mixed-level or lower-proficiency learners, such as immigrants or IELTS students at band 4.0–5.0. However, teacher guidance remains essential to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and alignment with learning objectives.

Looking five years ahead, AI is expected to enable more adaptive and personalized learning environments. AI-driven feedback tools may provide instant support for speaking and writing practice, allowing learners to practice more independently outside the classroom. At this stage, my role as a teacher will increasingly shift from content delivery to learning design and facilitation, focusing on task design, learner engagement, and critical use of AI-generated feedback.

In the next ten years, AI may become deeply embedded in language education systems. Despite this, I believe human teachers will remain central. Ethical concerns such as data privacy, over-reliance on AI, and reduced learner autonomy must be carefully addressed. My long-term vision is to use AI responsibly to enhance learner-centered instruction while preserving the teacher’s role in fostering critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and meaningful human interaction.
