What’s Next with AI in My ESL Teaching Practice

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Drawing on the 2025 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report: Teaching and Learning Edition , particularly the sections on Artificial Intelligence, this journal reflects on how AI adoption may shape my ESL teaching practice in the near and far future. As an ESL and IELTS instructor working with learners of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels, I view AI not as a replacement for teachers but as a powerful pedagogical support tool. In the next two years, AI is likely to play a practical and supportive role in my teaching. According to the Horizon Report, generative AI tools can assist instructors with content creation and formative feedback. In my ESL classes, AI can help generate level-appropriate grammar exercises, vocabulary practice, and sample answers for IELTS writing tasks.
